What we do
The Glenrothes YMCA-YWCA is well known in the town and Fife , for three specific services: Housing for young homeless people, drugs education ( DELTA ) and youth and community support.
The YMCA-YWCA delivers many services from its central community centre in North Street , Glenrothes. From here numerous community learning and leisure activities take place from youth clubs, disco dancing to badminton and music tuition. The centre also provides information, advice, laundry and shower facilities for homeless people as well as signposting for other services in Glenrothes and Fife . A variety of community groups also use the building. Activities range from counselling and young carers support, to health checks and soup kitchens for the homeless.
Throughout the week Glenrothes YMCA-YWCA staff provide information, advice, laundry and shower facilities for young and older homeless people from its community centre in North Street . Specialist agencies from NHS Fife and the health sector use the building between Monday and Friday. On Wednesday afternoons the “The One Stop Shop” comprising Churches Together and Glenrothes YMCA-YWCA provides free hot food and signposting for other services, for the homeless, in Glenrothes and Fife .
Homeless Housing
The "Y" runs three Glenrothes hostels and 15 flats that offer accommodation and support to 50 young homeless people between the ages of 16 and 25. Once at the Glenrothes “Y”, a young person will live temporarily in either a 9-bedded male-only hostel, 6-bedded female-only hostel, a shared two-bedroomed flat within a supported block of flats, or an independent single bedroomed flat located within Glenrothes or Leslie. For those with high level support needs Glenrothes YMCA-YWCA will refer that young person to specialist external agencies concerned with drug dependency, mental health and so on. Whilst at the "Y" homeless youngsters learn or develop independent living skills such as cooking, cleaning, budgeting or attending appointments, for eventual self-sufficiency in their own accommodation. Many move on to their own tenancy with Fife Council, a Housing Association, a private landlord or friends. In very few cases they are able to move back to their own family.
Drugs Education Liaison Training Agency (DELTA)
The “Y” also manages Delta (Drugs Education Liaison Training Agency) which provides a Fife-wide formal and informal drugs education service through a team of 5 specialist workers. The team delivers tailored sessions in all Fife primary and secondary schools. Informal engagement occurs at youth clubs and in community settings while drugs and alcohol awareness training is delivered to professionals in the private, public and voluntary sectors.
