What is the YMCA-YWCA?
The Glenrothes YMCA-YWCA (the “Y”) is located right in the centre of Glenrothes in North Street (opposite the Royal Bank of Scotland ) and has been there since 1963. The "Y" is a voluntary organisation and is open to everyone in the community, no matter what age. The Glenrothes YMCA-YWCA stands for Young Mens' Christian Association and Young Womens' Christian Association.
The charity has developed and expanded a number of different services for young people and the local community. These have been introduced at staggered intervals throughout its long history. These services include drugs and alcohol education in all Fife schools, supported homeless accommodation in Glenrothes and a variety of classes and activities delivered from the community centre in North Street .
The “Y” is supported by a number of different bodies, ranging from Fife Council and NHS Fife through to local and national trusts like Creative Scotland and Cashback for Communities.
Community fundraising continues throughout the year from with summer fetes, sponsored events and social evenings. Nearly all of the local Glenrothes churches provide support with food parcels, assistance at the weekly soup kitchen and spiritual support.
The Glenrothes YMCA-YWCA is governed by a voluntary Board of Trustees who are also company directors. These Trustees have a rich variety of skills drawn from the working and volunteering in the voluntary, private and public sectors. The Board of Trustees governs the “Y” and meets quarterly as a complete Board and in smaller committees. The charity holds its AGM in June to which all members of the public are invited.
